Some students were asked about the number of hours they spend per week studying. Their answers are listed below:

3,9,12,9,15,4,5,9,22,5,

Mean, Median, Mode and Range FS1(a)

Calculate the mean number of hours spent studying.

Give your answer to 1 decimal place.

Answer type: simple

Mean, Median, Mode and Range FS1(d)

Calculate the median.

Answer type: simple

Answer:

Workings:

Putting the numbers in order gives:

3,4,5,8,9,9,912,15,22

The position of the median value is given by \dfrac{n+1}{2}, which is \dfrac{10+1}{2}=5.5

The median is therefore halfway between the 5^{\text{th}} and 6^{\text{th}} value, which is 9
